About PDX Woodworks

Michael Ortolano

Michael Ortolano, founder of PDX Woodworks, is a Portland, Oregon-based furniture maker specializing in handcrafted tables yet eager to tackle any woodworking challenge. Driven by a passion for creating furniture that tells a story, Michael believes in the power of handcrafted pieces to bring people together and create lasting memories.

His woodworking journey began in Albany, New York, where he started a career as a scenic carpenter. When it came time to leave NY, the choice of Oregon was all too clear. Being truly captivated by the idyllic coastline and forests one can only find in their dreams, he packed a truck and came out west in 2002. The more projects he completed, the more he realized that he could actually become a real furniture maker! He honed his skills as a scenic carpenter at Portland Center Stage and later at a local fine furniture shop, immersing himself in the world of skilled craftsmanship for well over a decade. Being surrounded by veteran furniture makers ensured he was able to master the most tried and true techniques.

The unexpected arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic brought about a shift in priorities. As the furniture shop closed and schools shut down, Michael stepped up to care for his young boys, putting his career on hold…for a moment. But the urge to create never truly faded. Working from his single-car garage, he had the idea to use his skills to craft and sell dovetail boxes, a project that rekindled his passion and reminded him of the joy he found in creating furniture. His ambition led him to try to create a company of his own. In July 2020, with a ragtag assortment of machines and a heart full of determination, Michael officially launched PDX Woodworks!
